Major General Tim Hyams CB OBE
Chief Executive, Army Benevolent Fund
Tim Hyams was commissioned into the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards (now The Royal Dragoon Guards) in 1986.
His early service was spent in Germany and on operations in Northern Ireland. More recent operational experience has seen him deploy to the Balkans, Iraq and Afghanistan. For his work in support of operations in Afghanistan, Tim was awarded the OBE. He was appointed CB in the 2022 New Year Honours.
More broadly, he has fulfilled roles focused on policy and strategy in the Ministry of Defence and at Army Headquarters. On promotion to Major General in 2016, he was appointed as General Officer Commanding, Army Recruiting and Training Division. He then served as Director Land Warfare, before assuming the posts of Military Secretary and General Officer Scotland in 2019.
On leaving the Army, he was appointed as Chief Executive of the Army Benevolent Fund in November 2021. As the Army’s national charity, it provides a lifetime of support to serving soldiers, former soldiers, and their immediate families when they are in need, in order that they have the opportunity to avoid hardship and enjoy independence and dignity. Last financial year it provided some £8.4M of benevolence in support over 65,000 members of the Army family in 47 countries around the world; with the youngest beneficiary being aged 7 months old, and the oldest aged 103. The Charity is there for soldiers, for life.
