Qualitative research exploring public perceptions of the Armed Forces and veterans. This project forms the qualitative half of a larger project with MOD who funded the quantitative perceptions survey.

A 9-month commissioned piece of research conduct a systematic review of all relevant quality literature on the current scientific evidence, and changes and gaps in evidence, concerning the mental health needs of serving and ex-Service personnel and their families since 2012, including the perspectives of key stakeholders.

A two-and-a-half year study to identify how ex-Service personnel may be more vulnerable to developing issues with gambling that the wider population, and estimate any resultant healthcare costs by exploring the relationship between financial management and mental health problems. In November 2016, FiMT partnered with St George’s House to deliver a consultation to explore how transition is approached and managed in different settings and sectors. These transitions were examined from three different perspectives: of the individual experiencing the change; the network of family and friends around the individual; and wider societal stakeholders.

A 15-month study into understanding which ex-Service personnel are more likely to recognise they have an alcohol problem, and then who goes on to seek help for it. Read the press release.

A grant to assess the long-term impact of competing in the Invictus Games. The four-year project will compare wellbeing of competitors with non-competitors.

A 3-year UK-wide study of the experiences of British ex-Service personnel who have undergone a ‘negative transition’ back into civilian life. Specifically, the research would look at those who have ended up homeless, in prison or under mental health supervision.

A new guide launched on 7th June 2018, to help care homes provide better support for the hundreds of thousands of service men and women in assisted living in the UK. Produced by Demos think tank, in partnership with the Forces in Mind Trust and the Care Cluster of Cobseo (The Confederation of Service Charities), the guide will be sent to all UK care homes and care home provider headquarters.

This year-long project was the first phase of a two-phase project. The first stage focused on assessing how engagement with, and by, families works, and where it could be improved. The findings from this first phase will include recommendations for a pilot project. The proposed pilot study would be the second phase.

While most UK Service leavers experience successful transitions to civilian life, some face challenges including ill health, unemployment, debt and homelessness. In 2016, the Forces in Mind Trust (FiMT) ran a consultation on Life Transitions that identified individual resilience as an important driver of successful transition. Building on this engagement, FiMT has commissioned RAND Europe to conduct a systematic review of the literature on the effect of Service leavers’ resilience on transition pathways and outcomes.
